On November 7, 2024, Venturn proudly attended the SmartPort Summit with eight enthusiastic team members. This leading event focused on the future of the Port of Rotterdam and water-related challenges. Under the theme “Water & The Port,” the day offered a diverse program featuring research projects, innovative ideas, and meaningful discussions. Organized by SmartPort, the event stood out for its seamless execution and an inspiring lineup of speakers.
Delving into Smart Logistics
The day began with various knowledge sessions on Smart Logistics, covering a wide range of topics. Key discussions included the growing vertical integration in the logistics sector (carrier haulage) and its impact on hinterland logistics. These insights are crucial not only for seasoned professionals but also for participants in a logistics traineeship. Cyber resilience in the Port of Rotterdam was also a major topic, underscoring its urgency in the increasingly digital maritime sector. Venturn Young Professional Robert Roosen even spotted parts of his thesis referenced in one of the presentations, highlighting his deep engagement with the subject.
A Wake-Up Call by Tom Middendorp
One of the day’s highlights was a compelling speech by Tom Middendorp, former Commander of the Armed Forces. He spoke passionately about the pressing reality of climate change and the challenges it poses to the maritime sector. Middendorp also emphasized the opportunities available for timely and decisive action. His message strongly resonated with the audience, including participants in our maritime supply chain traineeship.
Tackling Water Challenges in the Knowledge Carousel
The afternoon focused on the future of water management in the Port of Rotterdam. During the Knowledge Carousel, three critical water-related challenges were presented. These interactive sessions allowed participants to engage with experts and brainstorm innovative solutions. For trainees involved in a work-and-learn program, this was an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and expand their professional network.
Sjors Kalfsterman, a Venturn Young Professional representing the Inland Terminal Group, reflected on the event:
“SmartPort was a perfect opportunity to engage with experts. It was highly educational to discuss the effects of carrier haulage and the impact of low water levels on inland shipping.”
Future-Oriented Insights
For Venturn, the day was not just a source of knowledge but also a chance to actively contribute to the future of the port. The event underscored the importance of collaboration between businesses, researchers, and policymakers to find innovative and sustainable solutions for todays and tomorrow’s challenges. This focus on development aligns perfectly with our traineeship programs, which support young professionals in gaining knowledge and experience in the maritime sector.
Innovation and Collaboration as Keys to Success
The SmartPort Summit delivered a unique mix of depth, inspiration, and networking opportunities. For Venturn, it was a day full of valuable insights, not only for ongoing projects but also for shaping a broader vision for the future of the Port of Rotterdam. Through our management traineeship and work-and-learn offerings, we continue to nurture young talent in this dynamic industry.
